So what are the old ones? Parties, bars, book clubs, bridge clubs, raves, coffee at Starbucks.... Has Twitter, Facebook and MySpace taken the place of the human interaction that we all thought was our social network or is it just an addition to the list? I like to think the later. A new medium by which to communicate with other people who have things in common. Many people with common interest, that we might not actually ever meet in person, given the opportunity to talk and share with others. I only worry that there is the opportunity for some people to use it in place of human interaction. My hope is that it is used to expand our horizons and not limit them. Very funny to see Oprah learning to use Facebook and then Twitter. Ashton Kutcher using it as a platform to further good causes as well as joke around and share with his fans on Twitter.
Interstingly enough over the past week I have talked with several people who are making statements like "I've chosen to stay away from Facebook." "I'm not getting hooked on Facebook." "I keep hearing about these Mafia Wars on Facebook and I'm saying clear." They have a fear of this new Social Network like it was a drug. One that have very addictive qualities. So I will continue to visit Facebook, MySpace and Twitter in hopes that I will stay connected with old and new friends and maybe just maybe be on the cutting edge of some great announcement.
